3 Ways Families Can Safely Manage the Online World

3 Ways Families Can Safely Manage the Online World

Helping families navigate the digital world can be a daunting task for families.

My kids, like most, are growing up digital. They consume media at lightning speeds and making sure our home network is secure, and the sites they visit are age appropriate can be daunting.

Keeping up with technology can be challenging, but it does not have to be impossible to manage. Especially if you have a service provider, who makes our job easier by doing the legwork and providing resources that would allow our kids to safely and responsibly use technology.

The best way to set up our children for success is by providing them with a solid foundation. That includes teaching them the importance of being responsible digital members. It starts with us as parents being the role models and creating best practices of proper technology use. And having an Internet service provider (ISP), that has your back when we’re in the trenches of teaching kids the who, what, when and how of proper technology use helps ease our fears in ensuring they are properly set up.

So any parent who wants their families to navigate the Internet safely, these three ways is the best way to get started.

  1. Set up content filters. With fast Internet speeds comes much responsibility, and knowing which services are needed to protect our kids online is essential to keeping them from accessing content not suitable for young eyes. That is why I was happy to learn how committed Verizon FiOS is in providing resources to help families better manage their technology experience. They’ve partnered with a content filtering company called Mobicip that help kids make the right digital choices.
  2. Have a security plan. Be sure to have an Internet service provider which provides parental controls to keep inappropriate content at bay as well as keeping you safe from malware and identity theft. Having a technical support team committed to just that is essential in keeping your family safe from digital harm.
  3. Have rules. Setting firm rules and establishing trust is the first step in having and maintaining a healthy digital relationship with loved ones. Also using a monitoring service like FamilyBase to oversee wireless activities and restrictions and usage limits can help kids better understand how to utilize their devices responsibly and safely.
